Newsletter 2: July 2002 The Tara Natural Healing / Energy Field Therapy Centre
PHASE 1 COMPLETED! A lot has changed here in the last 6 months! Not only has the outside of the centre changed dramatically - even to the casual observer, but the inside has also been transformed into a beautifully light, airy and tranquil space, which quickly creates a lovely feeling of relaxation and comfort in visitors. This is certainly in marked contrast to the dust, debris, noise, disruption and chaos that has been prevalent since the end of last year! As anyone who has moved house recently will vouch for, re-locating creates a huge disruption in one' life as the daily routine that feels so comfortable and reassuring (even if it does sometimes seem restrictive or repetitive!) is lost. Couple this with an extended period of major renovations and the whole process becomes a real test of one's internal stability! It has been an extraordinarily exciting period coping with all the changes and trying to co-ordinate all the various people and projects so that things flowed smoothly, and particularly rewarding now that the pace of change has slowed and the results of all the hard work can be seen and felt. It also feels good to be taking things relatively easy for a while and having more time to dedicate to the Energy Field Therapy projects. One area we would like to address at some time in the future is the development of a specific EFT programme for children, which targets their emotional and spiritual growth. So many of us have spent years of our adult lives struggling to release the difficult memories and feelings that we have carried with us for so long - often since childhood. Just imagine how different life would be if young people received this sort of healing and nourishment from the earliest years? We are so grateful to everyone who has contributed to this project. The good intentions of you all, whether you have contributed directly by being here, or indirectly by other means, permeates the building and will always do so. There is a wonderful line spoken by Maximus in the film "Gladiator", as he addresses his cavalry before they go into battle at the beginning of the film: "What we do in life, echoes in eternity". Similarly, the support we have received, which is evident throughout the centre, will enter the lives of all who come here. Your good heartedness will ripple through time and people in ways we cannot begin to imagine, so once again thank you! Taking charge of our own healing is a momentous decision to make. For many of us we only reach this point when either the traditional medical approach doesn't seem to be working, or we instinctively feel that healing ourselves is more than simply the eradication of problematical symptoms. Taking the first step towards a specific therapy means overcoming not only the uncertainty we may feel about the form of healing we are considering and who is practicing it, but also having the willingness to move beyond not only the limits of our own beliefs about healing, but the advice (however well-meaning) or judgements of others. I thought it would be useful to explore from my perspective, how this journey unfolds for many of us once we have made this choice and how we can understand the dilemmas that confront us, and the apparent contradictions that seem to emerge on our way.
The resolution to seek healing for ourselves, whether with Energy Field Therapy, or another form of holistic medicine, is a powerful and potentially life-changing decision to make. It sends important signals to the extraordinary power of our subconscious minds that we intend to both accept responsibility for improving our health and that we are prepared to try and strengthen our connection to the wonderfully regenerative and recuperative capabilities that it possesses. This commitment is so important to healing. In doing so we are attempting to reach the part of our minds that:
To harness this power is no small feat. To begin with, we need to let go of our traditional total dependence on the orthodox medical system for healing us, and the belief that doctors and other medical professionals automatically "know what is best for us". While we are handing our welfare entirely over to someone else, we are denying that we have the power to significantly influence our own health for the better and cutting ourselves off from that source of healing. As important as it is to let go of this dependence, it is essential to believe that we do have this remarkable capacity within us and that we act to enhance our connection to it. This allows us to begin harnessing extraordinary forces that make profound healing possible. This is not any easy step for most of us, as the power we have entrusted to the medical health-care hierarchy for so long has accustomed us to looking outwardly for the source of healing, rather than within. Although many of us are currently recognising the importance of the role that we can play in determining the state of our health and are reclaiming the ability to profoundly affect the level of our well-being, it can still be a challenging mind-set to move beyond.
To heal or not to heal that is the question? In the run up to reaching this turning point, there is often the experience of not being able to bear things the way they are any longer. This can take the form of mounting frustration, desperation, or sometimes even anger about the physical or psychological problems one is having, or it may be felt in the elusiveness of a sense of satisfaction or fulfilment in life. If the struggle to find a successful avenue to well-being has been going on for some time, without success, or matters have been deteriorating despite sincere efforts, a feeling of hopelessness can also creep in. As the intensity of these feelings rise, they can provide a tremendous reservoir of energy to fuel the process of changing one's life. In essence this is similar to the remarkable build up of energy in a sprouting seed, before it surges through the seed coat to reach for the sunlight. Without the increasing pressure that develops before the coat ruptures, the shoot will not have the necessary momentum to leave the protection of its covering behind. This tension between the growth that healing offers and the stability of our current state of health (even when we are chronically ill) is similar to that in an elastic band when the two ends are being stretched in opposite directions. At some point, if the stretching continues, something has to give. As most of us are more used to resisting change than embracing it, even when we have reached this stage and we are telling ourselves that we will do anything to support our healing, we can find ourselves avoiding what is needed, or sabotaging what we are doing! There is something reassuringly familiar about our aches and pains, the way we feel emotionally, or the way we view the world. The prospect of allowing ourselves to experience a new sense of self - which often accompanies healing, is frightening or uncomfortable territory for most of us. We also sense instinctively that the root of our ill-health has a significant emotional component and that the accessing and releasing of this pain is intrinsically linked to our healing. We want to get better, but we are reluctant to face or feel the pain of what we are holding and how this might affect our lives.
Do we leave things as they are? - "It's not that bad after all", "things could be worse"! (one in four of us will visit our G.P. this year for tranquillisers or sleeping tablets!). Do we keep ourselves busy, in work, in other people's problems, so that we don't have the time or energy to think about ourselves or direct towards our own healing? Do we blot out our mounting discomfort, with drink, drugs
or other distractions, until this doesn't work any more? There are many variations of these strategies. We can also conjure up circumstances that magically seem to prevent us from receiving the healing we are contemplating! "Obstacles" just crop up; people make contact that you can't let down; there are more important "priorities" for the time being; it would be "selfish" to put oneself first; someone else disapproves!! What happens, is that we present ourselves with situations to demonstrate what is really importance to us by the choices we make. We can't really fool ourselves that we are committed to healing while we are choosing strategies that are taking us in the opposite direction, but we can buy ourselves time! There is nothing "wrong" with doing this, but it is certainly useful to be aware of what we are doing.
If we move beyond this point and embark on EFT, it is important to let go of the idea that we are trying to "fix" something that is wrong, or remove something that we don't want any more. It is helpful to understand that our bodies and our energy fields are laden with our life experiences (this is not a difficult concept, it has been demonstrated that under hypnosis that we can have a perfect recall of most, if not all, that we have experienced since birth, even including the tiniest of details not consciously deemed noteworthy at the time) and that when we suppress powerful memories or feelings they distort the flow of energy within us and the way we function. This is such a common experience that we barely need "proof" of its validity - we know how powerful the impact of our emotions are on our bodies and minds from being in love, grief-stricken, terrified or enraged. We know that if we experience any of these states for any length of time, we can feel ourselves changing - the way we feel, think and view the world. Most of us are also aware of people in our lives who have been immersed in one or more of these emotional states for so long that it has altered not only the way they look, talk and behave, but the way their bodies function. There are an increasing number of scientific studies available, which corroborate this connection. One recent study indicated that around 75% of people suffering from cancer had had a significant emotional bereavement such as a death or a relationship break up in the 3 years prior to the onset of the disease. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a well-recognized, extreme example of the physical, emotional and mental consequences of having lived through traumatic experiences. Most of us haven't experienced anything remotely on a par with this, but nevertheless we still hold a good deal of unreleased and unexpressed emotion, which distorts our health. To catalyse our healing, we need to begin releasing it.
If we commit to a sustained course of healing, we are consciously or subconsciously:
The next challenge we face, which can test our level of commitment and our ability to trust to our inner guidance, are our expectations about how the healing process should occur for us. If subconsciously we still believe that healing is synonymous with the removal or disappearance of symptoms, in as short a time frame as possible, we are still holding onto the "mechanistic" or "pill for every ill" philosophy of conventional western medicine. Buried at the back of our minds are memories of analgesics that instantly removed our pain, of aspirins that shifted headaches, of creams that removed skin rashes or itching, or medicines that "cured" our ulcers, allergies, anxieties or depression. We therefore expect or hope that healing means quickly becoming "better", preferably without any discomfort, disruption or pain! If we truly accept that healing involves the release of painful or distressing experiences from within the mind and body, we will view the turbulence that can sometimes follow EFT with understanding, knowing that it signals that profound healing is occurring. The pace of our healing will be perfect for each of us. This is similar to the differing behaviours in a group of seeds planted at the same time, under the same conditions. It is remarkable how some will surge through the surface of the soil within a few days, while others will barely make an appearance after several weeks. They are all in the same environment, but the intelligence within each individual seed will govern its development in its own particular way. Similarly, when we receive Energy Field Therapy, an energetic environment is created within and around ourselves, which accelerates our healing in a most extraordinary way and this will manifest in the most harmonious, productive and appropriate manner for each of us. If we can trust this intelligence and continue to promote our healing - even when it may appear that nothing is happening on the surface, or that we appear to be getting worse in some way, we will ultimately heal in ways that we could not have imagined. This takes trust, perseverance and a releasing of all expectations on how this transformation should occur. I hope that you have found reading this useful or thought-provoking. In my next newsletter, I will look at the experiences that commonly arise after EFT and how suggest how they can be understood in the larger context of healing. It is with great pleasure that I can report that the BCMA is currently approving my application for recognition as both an Independent School for the teaching of Energy Field Therapy and as an Independent Clinic. This is important for me for two reasons. Firstly, it is very rewarding for me to have the work that I have invested into the structuring of a training programme and the care and Love that has gone into the development of the centre to be acknowledged by fellow therapists. Secondly, it is important to me to support any organisation that assists those involved in forms of healing that lie outside of the traditional medical system. These individuals are pushing back the boundaries of our ignorance, allowing us to glimpse with wonder the expanding possibilities of "new" forms of healing. It is important that they are encouraged to do so in ways that safeguard the health and interests of both those seeking healing and those facilitating this process in others. At the time of writing (17/07/02) I am just about to return to Stockport for two weeks of EFT sessions at both the Alma Lodge Hotel and the Albany Veterinary Clinic. On this visit I have decided to incorporate a weekend into the first 4 days, so that people will come towards the end of the first week and pets will start their treatment at the beginning of the second week. This allows me to offer more appointments - which is welcome, particularly as the schedule has been very busy on some occasions and on others I have been unable to offer any free slots. I am hoping that the inclusion of a weekend will ease travelling
and work commitments, but will be grateful for any feed back on this after
the sessions are concluded.
